‘Citizen Cajun’ Takes 4 Top Slots at The Hot Pepper Awards!

thpa09weblarge‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot and Very Hot mango-habanero salsas recently took four top places in the annual Hot Pepper Awards sponsored by thehotpepper.com.  This brings the number of national awards in three national fiery foods contests to nine for 2009, the first year of operation for Big Orson’s Sauce and Salsa Factory, Inc.

‘Citizen Cajun’ Very Hot and hot placed both First and Second, respectively, in the Fruit Salsa category.  Additionally, ‘Citzen Cajun’ Very Hot placed Second in the Extra Hot Salsa category and ‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot took Second in the Hot Salsa category.

Jonathan Passow, Editor of The Hot Zone Online and spicy food connoisseur recently published his own review of ‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot and Very Hot salsas.  In his review, titled Passow Becomes A Cajun Citizen, he had many nice things to say about the product:

“Instant, full on flavor of mango mixes in with the ginger to create one heck of an outstanding flavor combo. I don’t think I’ve ever had mangos with ginger, what a pleasant pairing. The onion follows this and comes in and out of the flavor equation. Up next is the Bell Pepper, a little tartness from the lime juice, a bit hit of garlic (which were a little bit too solid compared to the rest of the ingredients), then the tomatoes. There’s a hint of fruity Habanero but it, along with the cane sugar, is lost amongst the mango and ginger. I do detect a hint of cilantro.

The heat starts out on the side of the tongue, moves to the front of the tongue, builds, then fades to a back of the throat burn. It’s a nice high-end medium salsa with just enough heat to get me sniffling a little. I’ve had Orson’s Very Hot version of this and I must say I prefer the heat level on that one over this one, but it’s still fantastic.

Too many companies that do a fruit salsa seem to make a regular salsa (heavy tomato based), and then throw some fruit on top of that. It’s nice to see a salsa completely fruit centered and done so well! Hats off to you, Big Orson!”

He went on to give ‘Citizen Cajun’ an 8.6577 on his ten-point taste scale and a 6.5 out of ten on his heat scale.  Wow!  Thank you Jonathan…I’m pleased that you liked it well enough to write a review!

‘Citizen Cajun’ Wins 4 Awards at Zest Fest 2009!

dsc01954“Citizen Cajun’ Very Hot mango-habanero salsa captured three awards in the 2010 Fiery Foods Challenge held at Zest Fest in Fort Worth, TX.  The weekend festival celebrating hot and spicy foods and the zesty foods culture was held on the weekend of September 10-12, 2009 and was sponsored byChile Pepper Magazine.

The Fiery Foods Challenge is the largest, nation-wide blind judging of spicy foods in more than 80 categories.  Literally hundreds of products compete for the top three spots in each category.  In addition to ribbons for second and third place finishes, the overall champion is awarded a cut crystal ‘Golden Chile’ trophy as that year’s best product in that category.

In the heart of salsa country, the competition was truly intense.  Many fruit and habanero salsas were entered–many from the great state of Texas, which many believe is the birthplace of hot salsa.  Nonetheless, this humble little salsa company from Georgia stepped up to the plate and went to bat against the pros around the nation.

When the winners were announced, ‘Citizen Cajun’ Very Hot mango-habanero salsa was awarded Third Place in the Fruit Salsa- Prepared category and Another Third Place in the Habanero Salsa - Prepared category–where it competed against all habanero salsas (including the tomato-based varieties).  Given the depth of the entries in these two categories, this is indeed a high honor in the largest of national judgings.

‘Citizen Cajun’ Very Hot mango-habanero salsa also was awarded Second Place in the Cocktail Sauce - Prepared category.  If you don’t believe how good this product is as a cocktail sauce, try it on oysters on the half shell or as the cocktail sauce in which to dip boiled shrimp.

If those prestigious awards weren’t enough for one festival, Chile Pepper Magazine conducted a “People’s Preference Awards” judging during the show.  Random individuals were selected from the show’s attendees to participate in a blind judging in several categories.  When the results were announced on Sunday afternoon, ‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot mango-habanero salsa placed Second overall in the entire show in the Salsa category.

It is truly an honor to stand aside the giants of the salsa industry and be judged one of the best.

‘Citizen Cajun’ Places Second at Weekend of Fire Salsa Contest

dsc01897Citizen Cajun Hot mango-habanero salsa placed second in the final round of the Salsa Contest held at Jungle Jim’s International Market’s third annual Weekend of Fire show at the Oscar Event Center in Fairfield Ohio.  Only a locally made brand garnered more votes in the publically-judged final round of the contest.  Citizen Cajun was one of four finalists selected from a field of more than 40 entrants nation-wide.

“The reaction of the public was nothing short of phenomenal,” said Phil Steffen, Big Orson’s Executive VP of Sales, “Citizen Cajun has certainly been a huge hit at the show.”

All of us at Big Orson’s Sauce and Salsa Factory would like to extend a heart-felt ‘thank you’ to the good folks at Jungle Jim’s International Market.  The support they have shown our products has been instrumental in our success.

‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot A Finalist At ‘Weekend of Fire’

It’s official.  ‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot mango-habanero salsa has been selected as one of the ‘final four’ salsas judged at the annual Weekend of Fire sponsored by Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, OH.  More than forty different salsas were submitted for judging by an independent panel in this national contest.  Out of them, ‘Citizen Cajun’ made the cut as one of the top four.

The final judging will take place at the Weekend of Fire Show the weekend of August 1st and 2nd at the Oscar Event Center adjacent to the Jungle Jim flagship store, which boasts ’six acres of food under one roof’.  At the show–which is open to the public–the four finalists’ products will be sampled at the Blogger’s Booth and participants can vote for their favorite.  The winner will be announced at show’s end on August 2.  This is a major fiery foods show and an honor to be included in the top four.

So if you’re in the Greater Cincinnati area, come to Fairfield the first weekend of August and vote for ‘Citizen Cajun’ at the Weekend of Fire.  While you’re there stop by and see us–we’ll be in booth 46.

Recently, peppersandmore.com held a multi-person review of Citizen Cajun Hot and Very Hot breand mango-habanero salsa. The reviewer conducted his review at a hog roast and selected guests to taste and comment on the salsa. Some of the highlights:

“The first words out of his mouth were ‘This is very fresh’.   The mix of mango and bell pepper really blend well together.   He also added (which I was surprised) ’I love the hint of cilantro.’”

“He could not stop raving about the unbelievable mango flavor. He also enjoyed the freshness of the bell peppers and the onions…After the pig was done, Rocco could be seen dunking the ribs right into the jar and telling everyone how good this salsa really is.”

“He mentions right away that he likes that it is not to[o] chunky.  Has a perfect consistenc[y] to it. The mango[e]s go great with the peppers and onions. He also like[s] that the ingredients say there is tomato in there but it[']s more about the fruit. Can not wait to try this on the pork…He love[d] the freshness and was very happy that this was a fruit salsa rather than the tomato salsa. Was very impressed and could be seen right next to Rocco dipping the ribs in the jar.”

“My first experience with salsa was a good one. I never thought that peppers and fruit would go so well together. Later on in the evening i saw her putting the salsa on the Hawaiian meatballs. When I asked her how it was she replied it makes the meatballs sweeter.”

“I have always enjoyed watching other people try new products. Just to look and see that smile when they put something in their mouth that really taste[s] great and this is the salsa that does it. Big Orson’s salsa has come up with a great blend of fruit and peppers that will really get your attention.”

“This is a salsa that you are going to want to put on just about anything. I had some left in the jar the next morning and put it over some eggs. The sweetness of the fruit made for a great morning meal. From your morning eggs to your evening Pig roast this salsa will stand up to it all.”

‘Citizen Cajun’ Featured in Chile Pepper Magazine’s Salsa Scoop!

Chile Pepper MagazineChile Pepper magazine, the pre-eminent zesty foods publication in the world, selected ‘Citizen Cajun’ Very Hot mango-habanero salsa for inclusion in its “Salsa Scoop” column in the July, 2009 issue.  This column features a different class of salsas (meaning fresh, jalapeno, black bean, fruit, etc.) in each bi-monthly issue.  This month’s focus was fruit salsas, and ‘Citizen Cajun’ was reviewed among six other fruity salsas.  Their verdict?

“What other fruit salsas lack in the heat department, Big Orson’s makes up tenfold with a spark of habanero–a burning fire accompanies this Cajun spin on mango salsa.  Ginger also adds a nice subtlety to this chunky concoction that’ll kick your taste buds into gear.”

Fine praise, if I do say so myself.

Recently, The fine folks at The Hot Zone Online decided to run a feature article on ‘Citizen Cajun’ and to share their thoughts on the salsa after an interview with Yours Truly.  Here’s some of what they said about the salsa:

Trying to create a new and exciting salsa in the marketplace can be about as challenging as trying to recreate the wheel. Skeptics will tell you that there are only a finite number of potential ingredients and their combinations are also similarly limited. Such nay-saying is totally lost on the fine folks at the Big Orson Sauce & Salsa Factory, Inc. who have dedicated themselves to making salsa that is both tasty and a lot unique. Jason Clabaugh is their stogie-chompin’ pitchman and all-around Cajun salsa guru who offers up some interesting facts about the origins of the company, life in New Orleans (or as some would say, N’awlins), and how mango salsa can be as good or better than tomato salsa.”

‘Citizen Cajun’ Hot Review: Let me start out by saying that I adore the taste of this salsa. The ‘hot’ version of this salsa has a nearly perfect blend of heat and flavor…so much so that I actually forgot that it was a fruit-based salsa rather than a tomato one. Just enough heat to get your attention (to me, about a 5/10 or so at best), this salsa is incredible well balanced. Not too chunky but not too blended either, it is a perfect consistency for either chip n’ dip eating or for culinary uses. I cannot use the word “balanced” too much with this product, as the mixture of sweetness and heat are simply outstanding.

It was hard to get this jar away from me and the tortilla chip bowl, as I felt this was the better of the two salsas for snacking. However, this was my jar of choice for my egg scramble as well as for use with grilled meats, especially chicken and fish. No matter how I used it, I liked it.”

‘Citizen Cajun’ Very Hot Review: Almost without fail, cranking up the heat in a given lineup of products almost guarantees that I will like them more. Not true with this salsa, as I thought the taste was a better balance with the hot version. However, this salsa is no slouch and will carry a wider appeal to those who just plain like their salsas with enough heat to make ‘em sweat. The heat is further up the scale, perhaps a 7/10, and reaches a nice simmer on your tongue after a few mouthfuls. The mouth feel of this salsa was different than the hot, and in some ways I did like this salsa better, but rather with cooking as opposed to snacking. Heck, I used this salsa like a condiment…poured over or dipped into by lots of food. See the picture below? While salsa ain’t mustard as far as hot dogs go, this Extra Hot salsa made one heck of an addition to our Memorial Day hot dog cookout with our Hebrew National franks! I could easily see this used with ribs or other strong meats, and mixing into something like egg or tuna salad would finally give those bland concoctions a little sweetness and heat to make you really crave them.”

High praise, indeed!  Interesting how both the reviews from Taste The Fear and The Hot Zone Online picked up on the versatility of the salsa as an ingredient in other recipes. We have a lot more of them on our Recipes page.
